The paper argues that a decade of connected products never delivered the intelligent home people were promised, because the intelligence was built outside the house. Early devices lacked the processing power, memory and storage for more advanced capabilities, so the industry moved much of that work to remote data centers. Anker made the same decisions for the same reasons. Those constraints are now gone.What replaces that architecture, the paper argues, is a home that thinks locally. It also warns that such a home will know far more about the people in it than today’s devices do, and that the record it builds should stay in the home, under the control of the people who live there. Why the smart home needs a new direction The first generation delivered a decade of useful connected products, but connection alone did not create the intelligent home originally promised. Most products still operate separately, with limited understanding of what is happening elsewhere in the home, while important decisions still depend on a connection to a remote system. In a survey of 1,503 smart home owners commissioned by Anker, 45 percent did not consider the smart devices in their homes to be very intelligent, and 67 percent said devices had stopped working when internet or Wi-Fi connectivity went down. What an autonomous home requires The paper describes the home as a body. Sensors at the edges work like neurons, taking in what is happening in one place. Immediate decisions work like reflexes, acting before anything has to travel. Home intelligence works like the brain, holding context and making the judgments that require a view of the whole, while memory gives that judgment continuity over time. The cloud sits outside the body, a window to the outside world rather than a part of it.The paper sets out three requirements for an autonomous home. It must reach every connected device in the house, which the paper argues requires the Matter standard, since intelligence that sees only some brands sees only part of the home. Its decisions have to happen locally, at the device for anything immediate and at the household level for anything needing a wider view. And it needs to remember, because a home cannot anticipate what a household needs without learning from what has happened before.The cloud remains essential in this model, supporting model training, updates, remote access, outside information and tasks that require additional computing capacity. Who holds the home’s memory To act on its own, a home draws on what its devices see, hear and measure over time, including images and recordings, recognized people, maps of rooms and daily routines. Over years, that becomes a detailed record of life inside the home, and the paper argues this is where the original Faustian bargain comes due, because the same architecture that built the first generation of products would make remote servers the default place for that record.
