Founded by third-generation farmer and technologist Clint Brauer, Greenfield Robotics is on a mission to eliminate herbicides, regenerate soil biology, and restore profit to farmers, all through scalable, intelligent technology. Farmers need another tool Herbicides reshaped modern agriculture, and the ground under that business is moving. In February, Bayer agreed to pay up to $7.25 billion to settle claims that its glyphosate weedkiller causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In March, Syngenta said it would stop making paraquat, already banned in 70 countries. Neither admits wrongdoing. Both products are still legal on U.S. farms. Weeds keep evolving resistance. That leaves growers choosing between heavier applications, more tillage, or hand labor. Greenfield's premise: farming work now done with chemicals can be done by robots. The founder "My dad got Parkinson's. That began the quest." That is how Clint Brauer explains the eight years behind Greenfield. He is a third-generation farmer from ground outside Wichita, Kansas. Before turning back to farming, he spent fourteen years in Los Angeles building technology before he moved back. His father, Tony, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Brauer came home, looked at what his family had sprayed for decades, and started building a machine that could do the same job without it. How it works Greenfield's system separates seeing the field from doing the work. First, a drone surveys the field and creates a detailed map of where weeds are located relative to the crop rows. That information is used to create a digital prescription for the robot. BOTONY™ then uses the map to navigate the field and mechanically cut weeds at ground level. The result is a fundamentally different approach to weed control: map the problem, then send the machine to do the work. And because the same autonomous platform can be equipped for other field operations, Greenfield is extending the system beyond weeding to include cover-crop mulching, crop feeding, and planting. The Dahl family has a long history in farm machinery, including the development of the Concord air seeder and a lineage behind Bobcat and Steiger. North Dakota committed $500,000 toward a facility for the work. The partnership gives Greenfield an established production operation as it moves from small-batch assembly toward volume manufacturing. For a hardware company, that step determines how quickly the rest of the plan can proceed. "For a long time we made these by hand in a shed in Kansas," Brauer said. "There's a production line in Fargo now. That changes how fast we can put machines out and how fast we can iterate on them." Beyond weeding Weed cutting was step one. Greenfield has been adding jobs to the same platform, so one machine covers more of the season: Cut weeds → feed the crop after dark → spread cover crop seed → mulch it down → plant the cash crop The mulcher that closes that loop is in trials at 15 locations, with university crews testing alongside the company's own.
