</div>Pittsburgh, PA, Sept. 02, 2026 <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com" target="_blank">(GLOBE NEWSWIRE)</a> -- Following a highly publicized altercation involving adults during a Pittsburgh-area youth football game, Gridiron Home, Inc. is calling for a renewed commitment to training youth coaches not only in athletics, but also in leadership, sportsmanship, conflict resolution and positive role modeling. The incident occurred during a youth football game involving 2 school districts while third- and fourth-grade athletes were on the field. The Steel City Youth Football League subsequently suspended two coaches pending an investigation. For Gridiron Home Founder and President Rob Hamilton, the incident points to a larger issue facing youth sports. “We spend an incredible amount of time teaching children discipline, self-control, teamwork and respect,” Hamilton said. “But those lessons only work when the adults standing beside them model the same behavior. A coach is one of the most influential people in a young athlete’s life. Coaching has to be about more than knowing the game.” Gridiron Home’s Impact Is Growing Gridiron Home is a Southwestern Pennsylvania nonprofit providing free youth sports programming, mentorship, leadership development, wellness initiatives and community engagement opportunities. In 2026, Gridiron Home helped 75 young athletes through its programs. And the organization is preparing for significant growth. Gridiron Home is projected to serve at least 125 children in 2027, an increase of about 67 percent in just one year. That growth reflects both the demand for accessible youth sports programming and the growing need for positive adult mentors, coaches and leaders in the lives of young athletes. Gridiron Home’s mission extends far beyond improving performance on the football field. The organization uses athletics as a vehicle to teach young people discipline, resilience, accountability, teamwork, leadership and respect — lessons designed to stay with them long after their playing days are over. Now, Gridiron Home wants to bring that same philosophy to the adults standing on the sidelines. Introducing “Coach the Coaches” Gridiron Home is developing a Coach the Coaches Leadership &amp; Sportsmanship Initiative designed to give youth coaches practical tools for navigating the increasingly difficult situations that can arise in competitive youth sports. Training is expected to address: <ul><li> Conflict resolution and de-escalation </li><li> Emotional regulation in high-pressure situations </li><li> Communication with officials and opposing coaches </li><li> Appropriate responses to bullying, discriminatory behavior and athlete concerns </li><li> Parent and sideline management </li><li> Sportsmanship and accountability </li><li> Athlete safety and emotional well-being </li><li> The responsibility of coaches to serve as positive role models </li></ul> The goal is not to criticize youth coaches, many of whom volunteer countless hours to support children. It is to support them. “Most youth coaches are there because they love the game and care deeply about kids,” Hamilton said. “But difficult situations are going to happen. Bad calls will happen. Parents will become frustrated. Players will become emotional. We train athletes to perform under pressure. We should be willing to train coaches to lead under pressure, too.” A Growing Sportsmanship Challenge The Pittsburgh-area incident is part of a much larger conversation surrounding adult behavior at youth sporting events. A National Association of Sports Officials survey cited by the National Federation of State High School Associations surveyed more than 35,000 sports officials and found that 68 percent believed sportsmanship was getting worse, compared with 57 percent in an earlier survey. Officials attributed approximately 40 percent of sportsmanship problems to parents and 25 percent to coaches. Perhaps most significantly, 50 percent identified coaches as the group most responsible for improving sportsmanship. Hamilton believes those numbers reinforce the importance of investing in the adults who influence young athletes. “Children are watching much more than the scoreboard,” Hamilton said. “They are watching how we respond when we’re angry. They’re watching how we disagree. They’re watching how we win and how we lose. Every one of those moments teaches them something.” More Children Means a Greater Need for Community Support Gridiron Home has committed to keeping its youth programming accessible, offering programs at no cost to participating children and families whenever possible. That commitment becomes increasingly important as the organization grows. With 75 children served in 2026 and at least 125 expected to participate in 2027, Gridiron Home will need additional community support to provide equipment, facilities, coaching, mentorship, wellness programming, scholarships and new initiatives such as Coach the Coaches. “Growth is exciting, but every additional child represents another commitment,” Hamilton said. “Another uniform. Another training opportunity. Another coach. Another mentor.
