What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and does it work? Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medications with clinical therapy to treat opioid use disorder. Keystone's MAT program uses buprenorphine, taken daily, and injectable naltrexone, given monthly, to reduce cravings and block the euphoric effects of opioids while patients build coping skills. The organization reports that patients in MAT achieve higher program completion rates, fewer relapses and reduced overdose risk compared to abstinence-only approaches.
