Gold fell more than 1% Thursday after U.S. producer-price data reinforced concerns that inflation remains persistent. Spot gold traded around $4,358 per ounce, while Brent crude reached approximately $105 per barrel amid escalating threats to global shipping and energy supplies. The August Producer Price Index increased 0.4% month over month. Following the report, traders raised the implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase at next week's meeting to approximately 70%, up from 62% before the data. The U.S. dollar and Treasury yields also moved higher, adding pressure to non-yielding gold. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet September 15-16. Wall Street Turns More Hawkish on the Fed Major financial institutions have begun adjusting their monetary-policy expectations. UBS recently changed its 2026 Federal Reserve forecast from no additional policy changes to two 25-basis-point rate increases, one in September and another in December. UBS cited stronger-than-expected employment, inflation risks and hawkish Federal Reserve communication. UBS has also indicated that higher real interest rates and a stronger U.S. dollar are likely to remain near-term headwinds for gold, while maintaining that these conditions do not eliminate gold's longer-term role as a portfolio diversifier. "The question for gold is no longer simply when the Federal Reserve might cut rates," Joseph said. "Investors are now confronting the possibility that persistent inflation and energy prices could keep monetary policy restrictive longer than previously expected." Gold ETF Holdings Reach Record High Despite the increasingly difficult interest-rate environment, investment demand for gold strengthened dramatically during August. World Gold Council data show that global gold-backed ETFs attracted approximately $18 billion in August, the second-largest monthly inflow by value on record. ETF holdings increased by 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes, while total assets under management climbed 16% to approximately $615 billion. North American-listed funds attracted approximately $7.7 billion, while European gold ETFs recorded roughly $7.9 billion, their strongest month on record. The World Gold Council also reported that gold gained approximately 13% during August, making it the third-strongest monthly return in roughly 25 years. ETF buying, futures positioning and a weaker U.S. dollar were among the major contributors. $105 Oil Complicates the Gold Outlook The surge in energy prices creates a particularly unusual environment for precious metals. Geopolitical instability and threats to global energy supplies can increase investor interest in traditional safe-haven assets. But higher oil prices can also increase inflation, potentially encouraging central banks to maintain tighter monetary policy.
