While this historic contact represents 8 million moments of hope for survivors, it also spans a wide range of abuse — emotional, physical, financial, sexual and technology-facilitated harm among them. The contact was a call from a mother in Arizona seeking help leaving an abusive relationship involving strangulation and stalking. Although she had obtained a protective order, financial barriers were preventing her from relocating her family to safety. “A lot of the time, what I hear from callers is them describing their relationship as having to walk on eggshells around their partner,” said Angela Allen, the Hotline advocate who took the 8 millionth call. Over the course of the call, Allen provided information and resources to help the caller relocate safely, along with information on counseling support for her and her children. “I always ask if someone has a support system, people they can lean on,” Allen said. “A lot of the time, survivors don't. I don't expect one call to bring an instant 180-degree change, but I hope they take at least something with them to start the process of change. The work is definitely rewarding," Allen said. "Making a difference, even if it's not in everybody's life — it's in somebody's life.” It took seven years for The Hotline to reach its first 1 million contacts in 2003. It then took just two years to grow from 7 million contacts in 2024 to 8 million in 2026 — highlighting the growing demand for survivor-centered services.
