The Workers’ Party is facing one of its most consequential moments in recent years.

On June 28, cadres will gather for a special conference where secretary-general Pritam Singh is expected to address members over his conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee. If he does not step down, cadres could vote by secret ballot on whether he should remain leader of Singapore’s largest opposition party.

With the party’s leadership elections happening later that same day, what does this say about the state of the WP today? Is this about accountability, or does it point to bigger questions about leadership and the future of Singapore’s opposition politics?

On The Big Story, Hongbin Jeong speaks with Eugene Tan, Associate Professor of Law at SMU's Yong Pung How School of Law, to find out more.
